We are going to explain a little bit of science – in simple terms – so you understand the importance of getting your hot water unit checked.
During the manufacturing stage a vitreous enamel (glass) lining is sprayed on the inside of the cylinder to prevent the mild steel cylinder coming in contact with the water. While the cold water is coming into the cylinder and heating, there is continuous expansion and contraction taking place.

After about 18 months the glass lining will start to crack and the mild steel cylinder is exposed to the water, which leads to corrosion. The manufacturer, therefore, has put in a sacrificial anode to make sure the cylinder lasts through the warranty period.

    How does it work?
The Noble Scale explains this that if there are 2 metals in water the more noble one will sacrifice itself to prevent the other from rusting. The cylinder will start to rust out rapidly once this anode has dissipated and you will be up for the cost of a new hot water service.

By simply changing the anode every 3-5 years you keep the rusting process at bay and extend the life of the cylinder indefinitely (we currently have over one thousand clients whose hot water service is over 30 years old).
Now, the second most common reason for cylinders failing is due to the Pressure and Temperature Relief Valve (PTR Valve) being blocked or corroded on the inside.

The Purpose of the PTR Valve is to open up automatically while heating to relieve pressure usually at 1400 Kpa and all PTR Valves should be released at least every 6 months to help clear the inside of the valve from rust deposits building up around the Valve spring.

Once the spring rusts it will either take more pressure to open which can cause the cylinder to burst, or it can jam in the open position releasing a slow amount of water indefinitely which will cause a big water bill and a huge gas or electric bill as the hot water service will be heating up many times a day instead of only once.

One of the benefits of our Plumbers checking the Hot water service is that we will teach the owner or tenant how and when to use the PTR Valve manually which will help the life of the Hot water service too.
